| BRILLIAN ENTERS HDTV MARKET Leverages LCoS™ Gen II Microdisplay Technology to
Develop And Manufacture Rear-Projection, High-Definition
Televisions
TEMPE, Ariz., NOVEMBER 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ –
Brillian Corporation (Nasdaq: BRLC) today announced that
it has entered the 720p and 1080p high-definition television
(HDTV) product market. Having developed its first 720p
rear-projection HDTV platform in the third quarter of
2003, the company is now offering its liquid-crystal-on-silicon
(LCoS™) Gen II microdisplay-based digital television
to brand-name original equipment manufacturers (OEMs),
who will be offered an opportunity to rebrand Brillian's
digital televisions and offer customized systems as part
of their large-area display portfolios. Brillian's microdisplay-based
televisions offer outstanding product performance and
breakthrough image quality that sets a new standard for
HDTV price/performance.
As the industry's first and only provider of LCoS™
Gen II technology, Brillian is leveraging its proprietary
and patented technologies, its systems integration expertise,
and supplier relationships to offer complete 720p and
1080p HDTV systems in the over 50-inch diagonal screen
size.
"We're offering a unique value proposition: a large-screen
television with breakthrough image quality so realistic
it's nearly photographic – at an incredible price/performance
level for the HDTV market," said Rainer Kuhn, Senior
Director of Sales and Marketing for Brillian. "To
win in this market, we have to continue to offer higher-performance
solutions than our competition. That's why we're offering
complete high-end, rear-projection HDTVs and why we're
so committed to pushing our already sizable technology
and systems integration edge closer to the consumer.
By managing the entire image delivery system, we can
ensure that each component is optimized to our new technology
and that no compromises are made in delivering the absolute
best possible image on the screen. In addition, because
of the speed and ease with which our technology can be
scaled to higher resolutions, it is the most attractive
technology platform for enabling the next generation
of high-definition television and computing video products.
As a result, we believe Brillian will play a key role
in the further transformation of television moving forward."
HDTV PRODUCT STRATEGY
Brillian intends to sell its 720p
and 1080p televisions exclusively to brand-name OEMs
and retailers, which may carry turnkey HDTV sets or integrate
the base TV-chassis with customized or complementary
features. These customers will then market the televisions
through their distribution channels. Brillian expects
its LCoS™ Gen II-based HDTV products to be available
via a variety of retail channels in North America in
2004.
Brillian is internally developing or sourcing all of
the key components necessary for its HDTVs. It will design
and manufacture the LCoS™ Gen II microdisplays; partner
with light engine designers and integrators; design and/or
purchase all of the necessary components; and develop
strategic manufacturing partners for final assembly.
By offering a total system solution, rather than simply
selling components, Brillian believes its high-end HDTVs
can enter the consumer market more rapidly and at attractive
price/performance levels – offering development flexibility
to its OEM customers.
TECHNOLOGY DIFFERENTATION
Brillian's LCoS™ Gen II technology
delivers extraordinary picture quality – with contrast
ratios as high as 2500:1 for very bright images (compared
with the typical 600:1 or less for other products). It
also features high pixel fill factors (greater than 93%)
for smooth, eye-catching imagery; fast response times
(less than 10 milliseconds) for excellent video reproduction
without motion or digital artifacts; and the ability
to easily scale to high resolutions to meet increasingly
higher-definition broadcast standards, all with the high
reliability demanded in consumer applications.
As a result, Brillian's televisions offer crystal-clear,
detailed images. There is no pixelation or "screen-door" effect
found in some other microdisplay technologies. Also,
there is no "rainbow" effect that some consumers
find troubling. With a color palette of 500 million colors,
Brillian's complete television systems feature rich,
saturated colors for vivid imagery. In addition, the
technology can scale to very large screen sizes without
the weight and bulk associated with projection CRT.
According to Kuhn, "With our technology leadership,
we believe our OEM customers can acquire premium, high-performance,
large-format (50-inch and above) HDTVs that will differentiate
their products in the marketplace from the older trailing-edge
technologies."
HDTV FORUM 2003

Officer Vincent F. Sollitto, Jr. will be speaking on
